Last night I was at Fairview Heights for their open mic; and so were ALOT of other comics. I mean ALOT. Twenty at least; which is twice as many as I saw the last time I was there. Though it took a while for them all to show up, we actually ended up with a good-sized audience. The audience was a little rowdy, to say the least. I was really nervous that I was going to get on stage and eat it; because that would erase all the confidence I'd picked up through the past month of work. Thankfully, I went up and had a really good set. It seems weird to say that a phrase as short as "Keep it going for me, I just quit smoking" could be so important, but as soon as I said it, the crowd cheered for me. From there my set went really well. I closed with my Gay-bar and gay-friend stories. At the part of my gay-bar story when I say "Can I buy you a drink anyway" a bunch audience members said "Yes" before I could get to it. So when I said "Yes you can" they laughed even harder because they were on the same "page" as I was.
