Usually I only blog when I have something to say about being on stage but... Last night I looked at my clock and realized I had time to go over to the Funny Bone and watch Henry Phillips. I'm a pretty big fan, I've heard him on the Bob and Tom show a bunch of times (back when I was allowed to listen to it at work). Anyway, the show was really good, Chad Huff MC'd, a comedienne, Alex House, did a guest spot, and the Feature act was really good. Check out Tim Gaither here . I'll hopefully go back and buy his shirt (15 bucks) and cd (10 bucks) tonight (combo, only 20 bucks) and then I'll know. Anyway, after the show, the five of us; chad, Alex, Tim, Henry and myself stood around the bad and shot the crap about comedy in general, writing styles and racism in comedy. As a bald white guy, I always kind of expect people to think I'm a racist, but no one has ever really said anything like that or implied it at all. I'm not sure if I 'blogged' this story before; but I'll type is again; When I was working in Fairview Heights with Pat Dixon, I mentioned this to him, and he said something like "No one's going to think you're a racist when you say 'Yay, me!' on stage".
I wish I could talk about racism on stage; John Roy (who won the Star Search comedy competition) is a bald white guy and he has some fantastic anti-racism bits and jokes. It could be argued, however, that anti-racism humor coming from me might not be taken too seriously when my closer is "the blackest thing about me is that I date fat white girls".
